The story, jelled out here, tells of the loves of three girls who had been students at a ballet school.

The tale opens with one of them living with a married man-married to someone else. She becomes pregnant-and later because of an illegal operation is made sterile.

Husband goes back to his wife. Girl friend marries a young man and makes his life a torment because she is child-

less.

All this is told in flashbacks.

When she discovers this, she races into the street, and in her wanderings meets the third dancer from the school. She proves to be a lesbian. This drives the mourning widow back into the street again. Finally she goes to a dock and jumps off.

Meanwhile, the couple who had married, after the alleged heroine became sterile, are on a train and he dreams of conking her on the head with a wine bottle, but when he wakes
